SERIOUS FACTS (PEOPLE)
There are more smokers in China than
there are people in the US
Given the country accounts for a third of the world’s population, that comes as no surprise. That number of people is quite high though, given the population of the United States stood at 313.9 million people in 2012. Yes, it’s true that more smokers can be found in China than you can find people in the US.
Interestingly, the gap between male and female smokers is quite minimal; 53 percent is comprised of men while the women make up the rest. In America, 20 percent of the population smokes. Seven out of ten non-smokers report being exposed to second-hand smoke.
The astonishing high figure of smokers in China could be attributed to the fact that tobacco use is widely accepted since back in the day. It is an age-old tradition in the most populous nation on earth and people usually give expensive cigarettes brands to government officials, their doctors and other close people in their lives. On occasions such as the Chinese New Year, weddings and other holidays, cigarettes are a much accepted and beautifully packaged gift.
